Diagnosing Unseen Robot Errors - Lam Research

Many robots need to be run in opaque boxes for safety and to reduce contamination. However, when this makes it difficult to diagnose and attend to errors when the robot malfunctions. Augmented reality can help engineers visualize robotic information that previously was shown as numbers on a screen. This provides for faster diagnosis and better intuition for robotic maintenance and manipulation. Note the video uses a visible robot to show how the holographic robot can respond to the real robot’s change in movement.

Education

Flashcards

Sometimes studying flashcards can be boring. However, augmented reality can create a fun way to study

Physics

Augmented Reality is great for making abstract things visible, in this project, we use AR to help students visualize energy transfer while a physical pendulum osscilates back and forth. The AR graph highlights not only the change in potential and kinetic energy, but also the loss energy due to friction over time.

Thermodynamics

This simulation allows undergraduate students to view the relationship between temperature, pressure, and entropy. Students are able to manipulate the vapor dome (a 3D map of the aformentioned relationships) and view how it creates the 2D graphs typically used in thermodynamic analysis. This simulation is currently being used at the University of Maryland for helping students understand Thermodynamics.

Games

Feeding Turnips - Elizabeth Childs, Dora Song, Tyler Kits, Alex Richman

Take care to feed your turnip and water him often. What will happen when it is full? And who’s satisfaction is increasing? Is it the turnip’s? Or someone else’s? Fill the bar for a surprise.
